Hoover Memorial Square
Sibu
This square is named after a great American Methodist Missionary, Reverend James Matthew Hoover, who was the first foreign pastor who served at the Methodist Churches of Sibu. Reverend Hoover was a key person in the building of 41 churches and 40 schools all over Sibu. He was also a prominent figure in helping to manage the Foochow settlement after the departure of Foochow settlement pioneer, Mr.Wong Nai Siong, in 1904. The naming of the square in his honour is therefore a recognition of his numerous contributions to the early development of Sibu.
