FIFTH BORNEO INTERNATIONAL BEADS CONFERENCE (BIBCo)
Discover all there is to know about the centuries-old craft of beads and beading. Listen to stories of how beads hold significance in history, mythology, economy and fashion; get some hands-on beadmaking and bead-working experience through workshops; and get your hands on some beads and beadwork at the Beads Abuzz Bazaar held throughout the conference.
The bead culture of Sarawak, part of a greater Insulindian heritage, is rooted in centuries of tradition. An ancient maritime trading network linked Borneo to the world; the beads most treasured today came from production centres on the Malay Peninsula, India, China and even further afield.
In the hands of Sarawak’s craftswomen and collectors, these masterpieces of the lapidary and glass artists from many lands became intrinsically ‘Borneo Beads.’
