Kuching is a multi-cultural city with a long history that includes Sultans, tribal chiefs, Chinese and Indian traders, White Rajahs, Japanese Occupation, Australian liberation and time as a British colony. This is a team event with teams of at least 2 and up to 6 members. The teams will “race” through Central Kuching testing the knowledge and agility of participants as they answer questions or carry out activities based on the clues and instructions given. The aim is to make discovering the hidden cultural heritage of Kuching fun and to provide a great learning experience; in addition, through this event, proceeds will be given to worthwhile heritage-related projects as well as to under-funded charitable organizations. The maximum number of participants is capped at 200 with a participation fee of RM60 per person.
156 participants inaugurated the 1 st Kuching Heritage Race on 30th January 2016; made up of 42 teams they came from all walks of life and from far and wide: family and friends groups, tour guides, bloggers, Associations such as the Sarawak Society for the Deaf; among the participants were visitors from New York, Paris, Tasmania, China, UK, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. With the support of many tourism and heritage organizations (notably the STB and SCB), the event raised RM 20,000, which was able to provide customized wheelchairs for handicapped children. With the experience of the first race, the next race promises to be more challenging and exciting as this focus on the undiscovered parts of Kuching that many local residents may not be aware. Following the experience and feedback from the last race, the organizers are crafting a bigger, better and tougher race.
Similar to the previous race there will be cash prizes, and there will opportunities for brains to triumph over brawn with our heritage quiz. This upcoming race promises to be even more fun and fast paced than the previous one. Everyone, young, old, visitors and residents will have a good chance of winning the top prizes.
