The 6th International Bornean Frog Race 2017

April 28, 2017 - April 29, 2017

frog race 2017

Amphibians comprise over  7,557 species, and living representatives include frogs, salamanders and caecilians. From a conservation standpoint, it is remarkable that a large proportion of the world’s amphibians- a third of the known species, are recognized as being under threat.

On 29 April 2017, conservationists in several countries will highlight the threatened status of amphibians via a series of activities aimed at arousing public awareness of the world’s disappearing amphibians.

This will be the sixth year they are organizing this event, the first, in 2012, at Camp Permai, Santubong, in collaboration with the Permai Rainforest Resort, in 2013, 2014 and 2015,  the event were held at  Kubah National Park, in 2016  at Lambir Hills National Park, and they partnered with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

A “frog race”, which will include talks on amphibians and their conservation, exhibits of sights and sounds, all open to the general public, and based at the Gunung Gading National Park, close to Lundu,  Sarawak, Malaysia, is planned for the day on 29 April 2016.  This event will again be jointly-organised by the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

The Race entails participants walking a trail at the Gunung Lambir foothills within the Gunung Gading National Park, for a period of 2 hours, and returning with digital images of amphibians. Prizes (books on amphibians and natural history, cash and special prizes) and certificates (jointly by UNIMAS and the Sarawak Forestry Corporation will be given to participants for the following categories:

1. Most number of amphibian species found
2. Best amphibian photo taken (in the DSLR camera, compact camera and mobile phone categories)
