KUCHING, Friday
– Borneo Jazz will organise, for the first time, a Networking Session entitled “Jazz & Money, Do They Mix?”
on Saturday, May 13 from 2.00pm, at the Ruai Bar at ParkCity Everly Hotel.
This inaugural session will be conducted by veteran international music producer, Patrick Lee-Thorp.
It provides a platform for aspiring professional Jazz musicians to ask a seasoned expert on the reality of pursuing music as a career, focusing on the Jazz music industry specifically.
Topics to be featured include the ups and downs of making a living of music and the international jazz scene from 20 years ago till today.
The session will give opportunity for jazz guest musician to share opinions and experiences on the challenges faced by professional artistes in the ever-changing business landscape of the music industry.
Patrick Lee-Thorp is currently based in Hamburg, Germany and has over 30 years of experience as an international music producer and publisher.
He created a South Africa-based record label, Mountain Records, in 1980 which released records by local acts such as David Kramer, Robin Auld and Amampondo.
He also created a sub-label known as Sea Records based in Europe, which has released non-label South African acts such as
Brenda Fassie, Philip Tabane and the Soul Brothers, as well as international acts like Tony Bird (USA), Janvier Honfo (Benin) and Celso Fonseca (Brazil).
This year marks the 12th edition of the festival and will feature international acts like Delgres from Guadeloupe/France, Laila Biali from Canada, Cape Jazz Band from South Africa and Osaka Monaurail from Japan, along with local legends such as Fluoroscent Collective featuring local violinist Nisa Addina and Michael Simon’s Asian Connection, featuring legendary pianist Michael Veerapen.
The Festival will be conducting musical outreach programmes where aspiring musicians can learn the basics of Jazz keyboard and piano, percussions, brass and guitar from professional musicians.
The Festival includes night performances with sitting and dancing areas and a wide lawn for night picnics surrounded by arts, crafts and food stalls.
